about

Please note - this is not a Black Sesame project, as such. It is a special commission, to commemorate the life of Romilly Walton-Masters, a friend and colleague, with whom it was my privilege to collaborate on her "Paris Diaries" series of short films.

We lost Romilly much too soon, in March 2015. Her family commissioned this composition to her memory.

Composer's notes:

1 - "Sass" (or "Sassy"). Here I was inspired by the young Romilly's sense of adventure, her fearlessness, her humour; her sense that there were no limits to what she could achieve. There is an echo of horses in the rhythm. There is also a reflective middle section, which was inspired by her short story "Green is not only for grass".

2 - "Drive". The Romilly that I knew was relentlessly productive, constantly creative, driven to produce work - despite occasional setbacks and frustrations.

3 - "Solace". This movement has more of a narrative: it begins at sunrise on a cliff overlooking the ocean; everything is calm, still, beautiful. There is a gentle breeze, which unexpectedly turns into a gusting wind, and we find ourselves in the middle of a storm, that no one had foreseen. After the storm dies down, there is again calm, and we find peace.
